Shelby Lee Adams would spend his summers in the mountains taking photos of the locals. Some people think his work is exploitative but, serving more as “self-portrait” and an attempt to trace his roots, it has instead offered insight into a culture hidden from immediate view. His work inspired a documentary directed by Jennifer Baichwal:
