all the following blah, blah, blah is inspiration for a new film i’m developing. here are my top five favourite album covers from the year that was 2008. i know i should be thinking about the music and all that jazz but when i was a kid i would go to the record store and i was often too scared to ask the apathetic employees if i could listen to an album. so if i had never heard the music the album cover art was my first entry into the world of the music. I actually got to discover some pretty cool bands just through their art. I remember looking for weezer’s debut album in a tower records in San Fransisco when i was in grade nine and i stumbled upon what is to this day one of the greastest albums of all time.
besides the phrase is “don’t judge a BOOK by it’s cover”, and i agree with zappa: “writing about music is like dancing about architecture”.
bad year. good album art from 5-1:
5. MV & EE - Snake Pass And Other & Other Human Conditions
i instantly get a sense of home mixed with a quit uneasiness. i haven’t heard the record yet but it has been recommended to me. i getting a feeling that there may be a serene twang to their sound but at a haunting distance.
4. Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill
when i first saw this cover i thought it was a new Goldfrapp album because the person on the cover appears to be the lead singer. i must have starred at it for about fifteen minutes before i realised that the person is a little person in a big hat. i love the feeling of a sixties family photo but without the smile that should accompany that autumn day. i’m gonna get this record today and love it…i’m sure of it.
3. Headless Heroes - The Silence Of Love
an absolutely stunning cover. it’s biting a little from Juana Molina’s amazing album Segundo but it creats a new charm with it’s hand drawn quality. her face appears to be bleeding out from some form of blood soaked wood panelling. oh what a black tear!
2. Pyramids - Pyramids
what can i say? BOOM!
1. Broken Social Scene Presents Brendan Canning - Something For All Of Us…
i love this cover and this album. the illustrations are done by a friend Juliana Neufeld and her work is truly great! this record sends me to a hot place where i can find food, good friends, and a timeless sound. all this loved by The Champ Brendan Canning.
